The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and architecture and urbanism studio One Works, based in Milan (Italy), presented today at a press conference, about the first phase of the reconstruction plan for the Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv, one of the many affected by the Russian invasion.

For the director of the UNECE forests, land and housing division, Paola Deda, the “UN4 Mykolaiv” project is an example of collaboration between local experts, citizens and international architects. “Although the war prevents it from starting to rebuild, we are laying the first stones to do it as soon as possible,” Ms. Deda said at a virtual press conference from the Ukrainian city.

Located 500 kilometers from Kyiv, Mykolaiv was one of Ukraine's most important ports on the Black Sea before the Russian invasion. The city will not be rebuilt from scratch, but serviceable urban infrastructures will be used and the port character of Mykolaiv will be respected.

For his part, the mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Syenkevych, hopes that the reconstruction plan for this city can serve as an example for other destroyed towns in the country.
